Abstract

Abstract The present study examined psychosocial variables. symptoms of poor metabolic control and self-reported adherence to a diabetic regimen in predicting overall levels of morale. Subjects included 77 Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) retirement community residents over the age of 60. Mean age of the study participants was 76.5 years. with a range of 61 to 92. The majority of the sample was female (80.5%) and widowed (63.6%). Almost half of the total variance in morale (45%) was accounted for by the model. Those older adults who report more diabetes-related impacts and problems (in terms of physical symptoms of poor metabolic control, perceived barriers to adherence and health-related declines in social involvement) report lower level of morale. An awareness of the potential psychosocial ramifications of poor management of chronic illness is recommended.
