Abstract

Psychoanalytic theory postulates negative psychological aftereffects from abortion but research has never been done to confirm this. A role-playing study conducted to test this thesis indicated that abortion results in immediate relief rather than in anxiety and depression. The psychological aftereffects of abortion seem to be merely societal myths. Even minor postabortion depression is probably a socially learned response and not the result of a trauma.
