Abstract

Mental health (MH) symptoms and disorders are common in sport and have recently garnered more attention in the media. There is evidence that MH symptoms and disorders occur as frequently in athletes as they do in the general population, and, though participation in sport may provide some protection regarding certain MH problems such as suicide or psychosis, there are also some unique stressors that athletes have that may increase their risk of MH issues. Injury or illness for an athlete can be a significant stressor that may result in MH symptoms and disorders. This chapter will discuss the psychological response to injury and illness.KeywordsAthleteIllnessInjuryPsychological responseStressorPsychosocial model
