Abstract
This chapter aims to analyse the importance of the referee’s psychological response to the VAR implementation. Nowadays, the demands of football require referees to make very quick and accurate decisions (De la Vega, Carrasquilla, Ortiz, Ruiz, & Armenteros, 2017a). These decisions can be affected by basic psychological processes such as attention and memory (MacMahon, Helsen, Starkes, & Weston, 2007). In turn, a review is presented and shows the influence that the VAR can have on the referee’s anxiety, self-confidence, leadership, and motivation (Johansen & Haugen, 2013). The chapter ends by emphasizing the importance of mental training with football referees in order to improve their performance.
