Abstract

This article described briefly some major trends in population psychology in the United States. The purpose was to give a broad picture of what is happening in this new field rather than to discuss in detail substantive findings. More extensive reviews of many of the topics touched on here can found in Psychological Perspectives on Population (Fawcett 1973). 2 basic trends should be noted: the involvement of psychologists in population studies is increasing rapidly and this development is taking place in an interdisciplinary context. Because other social scientists have long been involved in population studies psychologists are finding it to their benefit to work closely with sociologists demographers and economists in their research efforts; and in most castes the participation of psychologists is welcomed because there are so many unresolved issues in population that seem to require the application of a psychological research perspective.
