Abstract

The management of pregnancy, labour, and post-partum events has important psychological implications for, and effects on, the mother and her infant, of which the professionals involved should be aware. Obstetric procedures and arrangements can help or hinder maternal adjustment and the mutual attachment of mother and child. Concern is expressed that recent trends in obstetric practice and changes in the provision of maternity services in this and other countries may increase without adequate consideration being given to their psychological effects. This communication surveys briefly the psychological needs of mothers perinatally, notes some failures of present provision to meet these needs, and invites discussion of ways to prevent such failures.
