Abstract

Preventive psychiatry lacks an adequate scientific basis. Advances in behaviour modification may make an immunological model applicable to psychiatric disorders. The resistance of individuals to adverse life events may be enhanced by previous exposure to stressful stimuli of increasing magnitude. Anxiety seems to be a feasible target symptom. Systematic desensitisation offers an efficient and economic procedure to combat symptoms of anxiety in identifiable high-risk groups such as students, suburban housewives, and those about to be bereaved.
