Abstract

Most ART clinics routinely offer oocyte donation for women who are unable to use their own eggs to achieve a pregnancy. However, because previous research studies utilized small sample sizes, little is really known at present about the psychological and psychosocial characteristics of potential ovum donors. In recent years, protocols have been established to screen and counsel donor candidates. Psychological assessment of potential donors is recommended by The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and is an important aspect of the mental health professional’s role in the infertility setting. Research into the personality profiles of ovum donor candidates using The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) has been limited and inconsistent. Early research concluded that potential donors tended to be psychologically conflicted while subsequent research revealed that donor profiles fell soundly within normal limits.
