Abstract

Over the years psychologists have been analysing written statements in a variety of ways. Two methods are examined in this paper : the application of the Flesch Reading Ease Index and of Stylistics to confession statements. The former tests whether the written material is consistent with the reading ability and comprehension of the witness; the latter, denned as the relation between messages and the characteristics of human individuals who select and interpret them, has been used to compare authorship of written or recorded texts. Examples of the applications of both techniques to test authenticity of confession statements in cases are given.
