Abstract

Professionals working with children are being exhorted to work together, ostensibly in the best interest of children, which is clearly no simple task. The paper explores briefly key psychodynamic concepts (from the work of Lacan, Segal, Bion and Winnicott) which could be well-suited to addressing the complexity of the relationships in which professionals become immersed, in particular our work with children and young people. The paper thus aims to present theories which can inform good practice with children and explore the ways in which these can contribute to a common language with which professionals can seek to ensure the ‘five outcomes’. Brief examples will be drawn from the author’s practice within care proceedings in England and Wales and previously when working within a local authority context.
