Abstract

Abstract The term “Psychodynamic Psychotherapy” is a generic label that is applied to a large group of psychotherapies that are derived theoretically and technically from clinical psychoanalysis. The term usually is understood as being synonymous with the terms “Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy” or “Psychoanalytically Oriented Psychotherapy.” These psychotherapies share certain commonalities with regard to their approaches to understanding psychopathology, their psychological change strategies, and interventions that mark them as descendants of traditional or classical psychoanalysis, but they also differ from classical psychoanalysis and from each other in numerous ways, both theoretically and clinically.
