Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1988, Vol 33(1), 80. Reviews the book, Towards a Comprehensive Model for Schizophrenic Disorders: Psychoanalytic Essays in Memory of Ping-Nie Pao, M.D edited by David B. Feinsilver (see record 1986-97476-000). This volume offers original essays that collectively present Pao's pioneering work. Drawing on the range of insights provided by these contributors, editor delineates a model which, true to the spirit of Pao, shows how psychological and biological frames of reference can be integrated into a comprehensive treatment approach to schizophrenia. This model revolves around the concept of a “vulnerable self” in its developmental, diagnostic, and treatment aspects. This book will be of interest to those challenged by the possibility of a psychoanalytic theory of schizophrenia. Anyone seeking a new synthesis of psychoanalytic and medical theories will be disappointed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
