This commentary examines the British interest in research and organizational issues concerned with primary care psychiatry. The foundations of research endeavours in this field were largely established by British psychiatrists. Organization of health care services has had an important impact on the hypotheses that have been generated and the responses obtained. The present trend towards an integration of mental health services within the primary care environment are intuitively appealing, but these innovative propositions still need to be tested empirically.
