Abstract
Major changes have occurred since World War I in both the place of psychiatry in medical education and the education of the psychiatrist. The number of psychologists and their kinds of service have grown. The concerns of psychiatry are shifting from the problems of neurosis to those of psychosis and those in the community. Psychiatry has gained more responsibility for care in general hospitals. More conceptual models now offer a wider theoretical base for research and care. Some current developments may be going in the wrong direction, but today's crisis offers chances for fruitful new developments.
