Abstract

The psychiatric nurse’s role is today in an “identity crisis” (DeShouwer & Buerl, 1975). The crisis is being resolved, in different ways and at different speeds, in various countries. The emerging role of psychiatric nurses in the various countries is in relation to the developments in mental health as a field and to the social sciences as another source of explanatory theory relevant to mental health.
