Abstract
The Fairhill Psychiatric Hospital, a 176 bed institution (including 16 day care beds), opened on March 9, 1959, as a receiving hospital of the state of Ohio for the northeast part of Cuyahoga County (including part of the city of Cleveland) and Lake and Geauga Counties, covering a population of about 500,000. The hospital was gradually opened with an average census of 23.4 in April, 34 in July, 53.7 in October, 75 in January, 1960, and 92.6 in March. This reflected the use of 102 beds of which 10 are maintained for medical-surgical purposes and 18 on a mixed open ward. All types of patients are admitted with the chief exceptions falling in 3 categories: (1) children, except for evaluation; (2) organic brain syndromes, especially senile and arteriosclerotic disorders requiring prolonged custodial care; and (3) those patients with mental conditions requiring specialized physical
