Abstract

This paper reports on patterns of service in the Emergency Room of a Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center. The interdisciplinary approach has provided optimum handling of different psychiatric and social problems. Mental patients suffering functional psychoses or disorders accompanied by chronically impaired social adaptation present themselves to the E.R. at times of stress. The success of the E.R., according to our experience, is based on precision in diagnostic formulations, an early intervention in situations of stress and utilization of community resources. Social workers and visiting nurses are essential in promoting and maintaining changes necessary to the patient's re-integration into the community.
