Abstract

An advanced control for a solar array connected to grid system using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm tuned PI controller is presented. The solar array is connected to public grid via an Impedance-Source-Inverter (ZSI) by applying the Maximum Constant Boost Control (MCBC) method. The system complete model with control is implemented using MATLAB-SIMULINK simulation toolbox. To operate at unity PF, the ZSI modulation index is controlled to manage the phase current of the grid. Also, the control in the shoot-through ratio controls the voltage magnitude; therefore the maximum available power (MP) is transferred. The well-tuned results using PSO are compared with others tuned using the conventional Ziegler Nichols method under the same operating conditions. The system is subjected to variation in irradiation and 3-phase short circuit fault at point of connection. The simulation results using PI-PSO achieve supplementary enhancement of the system performance and stability over various operating conditions.
