Abstract

A 71-year-old woman complaining of progressive right upper-quadrant abdominal pain underwent a contrast-enhanced CT scan acquired in both arterial and portal phases. During the arterial phase a transient contrast enhancement (arrows) of both hepatic segments IV and V was demonstrated (Fig. 1). During the portal phase a hypodense lesion (arrows) with ill-defined borders was demonstrated within segment V of the liver (Fig. 2). Ultrasound-guided liver biopsy of the mass revealed actinomyces organisms (Fig. 3). Primary hepatic actinomycosis is rare. A hepatic tumor is usually suspected and a partial hepatectomy is frequently performed, but percutaneous diagnostic procedures may obviate the need for surgery.
