Abstract

This paper reports a case of a pseudosarcoma of the esophagus in a 72 year-old man, admitted to hospital for marked dysphagia and acute respiratory failure. The morphological examination was only definitely established after an ultrastructural study and an immunocytochemical demonstration of the presence of prekeratinous neoplastic cells. The patient died before any surgical treatment could be performed. The autopsy revealed the presence of a polypoid neoplasm, 19 cm wide at its broadest point, in the esophageal lumen but not overstepping the muscularis mucosa. There were no metastases in local ganglions. A review of the literature follows in which we underline the benign biological behaviour of pseudosarcomas in general, and especially of those located in the esophagus. We conclude that it is essential that this type of tumor is recognized, as the cure rate after the surgical resection is very high, regardless of the size of the neoplasm.
