Abstract

A distinctive new species of Chironomidae (Diptera) with a proboscis composed of elongate labella, Pseudorthocladius macrostomus Soponis, is described and illustrated for the adult male. Pseudorthocladius macrostomus is the first record of a chironomid from North America with elongate labella. The mouthparts of P. macrostomus are compared with those of species of Rhinocladius Edwards. This is a new record of the genus Pseudorthocladius from Florida.
