Abstract

This is a follow-up report of a 6-year-old girl with pseudocyesis, or imaginary pregnancy, seen as a 23-year-old adult. The patient had completely repressed the earlier intense wish for a baby but was able to feel and verbalize her anger at her abusive and neglectful mother, something she had not been able to do so as a child. Her ambivalent identification with her mother resulted in a fear of becoming a mother and of being cruel and unloving to a child as her mother had been to her.
