Abstract

In view of conflicting data concerning metabolism of ester type local anesthetics in CSF, the authors collected a sample of CSF from a series of 10 patients scheduled for spinal anesthesia. In addition, 4 patients with a history of recent bleeding into the CSF who were under general anesthesia had a CSF sample collected as well as 3 ml of venous blood. In all samples, pseudocholinesterase (PCHE) activity and dibucaine numbers (DN) were determined.
