Abstract
This chapter discusses the conclusions reached in a number of modern scholarly commentaries, by both Jews and Christians, on the book of Psalms. Two works has been chosen from around the beginning of the twentieth century and two from its end, in the hope that this will provide a reasonable guide to the manner in which contemporary scholars have understood the literal meaning and religious message of Psalm 93. Against the background of such a guide, it will be possible to exemplify, summarize and assess earlier Jewish interpretations of the same psalm, and to offer a comparative evaluation of the various approaches. production of the The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges, published by Cambridge University Press, stands singular testimony to the degree to which Biblical Hebrew was regarded in many circles as part of a classical education in the late Victorian and early Edwardian years.
