Abstract

In designing piping system of nuclear power plants in Japan, safety factors are set at each stage of design. These safety factors are determined in experiential way rather than theoretical way. Because of the accumulation of experimental safety margins, total safety margin of the systems against particular failure mode can't be indicated clearly and we can only judge thether the system is safe or not. Though it obviously has large safety margin, these circumstances make it impossible to design and operate the system flexibly. In this paper, we have applied probabilistic reliability method to piping models by defining limit state function using FEM analysis and response surface method. As a result, safety margin of piping against plastic collapse can be indicated quantitatively and partial safety factors are calculated. It can be said that the variation of flow stress and load mainly affects the occurrence of plastic collapse of piping.
