Abstract

Insulin resistance leads to islet adaptation characterized by increased insulin production in order to maintain normoglycemia. The mechanism of this adaptation is unclear. Increased insulin production can be achieved by augmenting insulin secretion from individual β-cells and/or increasing β-cell number.
