Abstract

ObjectiveTo screen for erectile dysfunction in patients with chronic renal failure and to identify its risk factors. Patients and methodsA cross sectional study was carried out in 30 patients with chronic renal failure. Erectile dysfunction was assessed by using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). ResultsPatients mean age was 49.6 ± 9 years. The average IIEF score was 15.62 ± 6.03.The diagnosis of erectile dysfunction was retained in 23 patients (76.7%). The prevalence of ED was significantly higher in patients with chronic end-stage renal failure (89.5%) than in those with stage 3 and 4 (54.5%) (p = 0.04). Furthermore, an age ≥ 50 years, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity or overweight, peripheral vascular disease and anemia were found in 60.9%, 73.9%, 43.5%, 78.3%, 75%, 60.9%, 30.4% and 82.6% of cases, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that smoking (OR = 17, CI [1.68 to 171.7]; p = 0.009), end-stage CKD (OR = 7.08; 95% CI: [1.07 to 46.67]; p = 0.04) and low HDL (OR = 18; 95% CI [1.19 to 271.46]; p = 0.04) were the only risk factors of ED in our patients. ConclusionsThe high prevalance of erectile dysfunction and the increasing number of the risk factors confront the seriousness of this sexual disorder in patients with chronic kidney failure.
