Abstract

To the Editor:— My experience corroborates the statement of Dr. H. Hailey (Pruritus Ani et Vulvae,The Journal, March 26, p. 837) that eczema due to allergy is the common cause of pruritus ani et vulvae. Favoring atopic allergy in many cases is the associated eczema in other areas of the skin and of other manifestations of allergy in a varying number of these sufferers. The familial predisposition to eczema even in the vulval and anal tissues and to other allergic manifestations as noted by Dr. Hailey is confirmed. I and many experienced allergists, however, disagree with the statement that cutaneous tests for allergy have no legitimate place in the diagnosis and treatment of eczema and the practice will probably be discontinued in the near future.
