Abstract

Hypertension is the main cardiovascular risk factor, with a major social and health impact. Furthermore, the diagnosis, treatment and control rates of hypertension in Spain reinforce the need for improvements to reduce hypertension-related vascular morbidity and mortality. The role of the Spanish Society of Hypertension – Spanish League Against Arterial Hypertension has been fundamental in this task through its promotion of both continuing education and research programs in all fields of hypertension. The CARDIORISC project, with the MAPAPRES and AMPAPRES studies, is possibly the most important of the studies sponsored by the Spanish Society of Hypertension – Spanish League Against Arterial Hypertension. Since its inception, this project has provided a huge amount of data for use in the clinical setting, teaching and research. A new protocol, the EVOLVE study, has been developed to further evaluate the role of ambulatory and home blood pressure monitoring in the follow-up of hypertensive patients.
