Abstract
Electronic and magnetic properties of mono- and bilayer Co/Cu(001) adsorption systems are studied using full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) total energy calculations. The large magnetic moment (2.07μ B) of the Co free monolayer is decreased substantially to 1.78μ B when adsorbed on the Cu(001) substrate — which is 5% smaller than that (1.87μ B) at the clean fcc Co(001) surface. In 2Co/Cu(001), the magnetic moment of the interfacial Co layer drops to 1.50μ B, even 10% smaller than the bulk value, 1.65μ B. These large proximity effects indicate that the Cu(001) substrate is harmful for Co overlayer magnetism and thus is not a good substrate for developing and studying 2D magnetism.
