Abstract

Background: The importance of proximal hyperplastic polyps (HP) is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of proximal HP at screening colonoscopy and whether there is an association with traditional advanced neoplasia and tubular adenomas (TA). Methods: 3121 screening colonoscopies were performed during the VA Cooperative Study Program #380. The proximal colon was defined as all segments proximal to, and including, the splenic flexure. Advanced neoplasia was defined as TA >10 mm, villous adenoma, adenoma with high-grade dysplasia and cancer.
