Abstract

ABSTRACT This article offers practical advice on fiction selection and collection management and underlines the importance of flexibility and common sense in establishing acquisitions guidelines and procedures. In the first section, which emphasizes the actual selection and acquisition of fiction, there are tips to assist selectors, advice on setting up a budget, and suggestions for collection development and weeding. In the second part, which focuses on methods to use in working with patrons and staff to use the materials, there are suggestions of straightforward and reasonably simple techniques that can highlight fiction collections and aid in their use. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the importance of understanding what an individual library's readers need, both for leisure reading and more serious pursuits, as well as on the necessity of involving all staff and patrons in the acquisitions process.
