Abstract

Peer tutoring and cooperative learning are both peer-influenced academic intervention methods that involve carefully structuring interactions between students either in dyads or groups to promote academic achievement. This paper provides an overview of these interventions and highlights and need for special services providers to be knowledgeable about these potentially powerful interventions. Similarities and differences between the two categories of interventions are presented and research supporting their effectiveness with a wide range of students is reviewed. Specific guidelines for development and implementation are provided, and issues to be considered when evaluating student progess are discussed.
