Abstract

Before 1997, there was no formal training for nurses carrying out sexual assault evidence collections in North Carolina. I was one of those nurses. My first initiation to a sexual assault victim and evidence collection process was when a nurse walked up to me, handed me the kit, informed me that a rape victim was in the room, and that I needed to go in and assist the physician with the evidence collection. I responded by stating that I had never had any training, education, or experience with taking care of a rape victim, much less carrying out evidence collection.
