Abstract

SYNOPSIS The value of developing Mexican land races and establishing provenance trials in Southern Africa in a breeding programme to achieve gains through selection of the best provenances to maintain genetic variability is described. The high commercial potential of new Mexican species, or provenances of species, is mentioned and the urgent need to secure further Mexican pine provenances in the immediate future is stressed.
