Abstract

Middle and upper Miocene sandstones are the best gas-producing reservoirs in the Veracruz Basin. Sandstone source areas for two of the main gas-producing sequences in Cocuite, Vistoso, and Playuela fields were determined by petrographic analysis with plate tectonics considered to be the key control linking the provenance areas to the basin. Upper Miocene litharenites and feldspathic litharenites in the Vistoso and Playuela fields are derived from magmatic arc sources in the Transmexican volcanic belt and the Anegada high. Middle Miocene lithic felsarenites and feldspathic litharenites in Playuela field are derived mainly from a recycled orogen and in Cocuite field from a dissected arc. Source areas for the middle Miocene sandstones were the Sierra de Juarez and the Transmexican volcanic belt, and carbonate fragments in both sequences were derived from the Sierra Madre Oriental.
