Abstract

At least one week out of the year, chemists around the U.S. take time out of their workaday routines to promote the message of chemistry's benefits to the general public. This year was no exception. National Chemistry Week 1996, Nov. 3 to 9, involved thousands of ACS members from all 188 local sections in a wide range of activities that are described by ACS News Editor William Schulz beginning on page 50. Reading about the clever, innovative, and entertaining ways chemists promote their profession's relevance to our lives is inspirational. And, as Schulz points out, National Chemistry Week wins positive media coverage of chemistry, makes important contributions to science education, and helps battle antiscience sentiments.
