Abstract

As the 21st century approaches, library/information services are rapidly embracing the concept of the virtual library as the vehicle to ensure equal information services to all citizens. This is the latest manifestation of an idea with deep roots in American librarianship. A pioneer in the development of this concept was Carleton Joeckel. This paper outlines his contributions to the evolution of the virtual library.
