Abstract

In this paper, the process of prototype development of a home-based heart rate monitoring system using a virtual instrumentation platform is proposed. A prototype was implemented on the virtual instrumentation to enable transmission of heart rate information of a patient via short messaging services (SMS) and email notification at the prototyping stage. The experiment tests showed that the instrumentation and measurement systems and components used in generating, acquiring, conditioning and processing signals were able to measure a patient's ECG, heart rate and other essential parameters when compared with an ECG device available in the market. The experimental results also reflected the virtual instrumentation platform is a viable option for rapid prototyping of a system before actual implementation.
