Abstract

This report describes several techniques for plant gene transfer by protoplast fusion. These detailed procedures are adaptable to a wide variety of plant species for the transfer of either the entire or partial genomes of nuclear, mitochondrial, and chloroplast origins between species. Detailed procedures should allow researchers to modify and adapt these techniques to suit their own requirements. Effort has been made to describe the protoplast fusion techniques used in the authors' laboratory as comprehensively as possible while citing the many alternatives and modifications that other workers have successfully employed.
