Abstract
Photorefractive crystals such as KnbO3, BaTiO3, and Sr1-xBaxNb2O6 are very promising for all-optical signal processing. Attention has been drawn to the extension of the photorefractive response up to telecommunication wavelengths. Recently it was shown that ion-irradiation of KNbO3 and BaTiO3 improves photorefractive response time and gain due to a significant increase of the trap density compared to the virgin crystal 1,2. Quite large photorefractive gain at 830 nm was reported in He+ ion-implanted Fe-doped KNbO3 waveguides together with a significant decrease in the response time3.
