Abstract

Proton-gamma angular correlation measurements have been made for the C 13(d, p)C 14 reaction through the 6.09, 6.72, and 7.34 MeV states of C 14 at a deuteron bombarding energy of 3.7 MeV. The angular correlations were measured in the reaction plane with the proton counter on the stripping peak. Plane wave stripping theory was used in the analysis. The 6.09 MeV state angular correlation is isotropic, consistent with a pure l n = 0 stripping process. The results for the 6.72 and 7.34 MeV states confirm the spin and parity assignments 3 − and 2 −, respectively, preferred on the basis of other experiments. All three angular correlations are symmetric about the recoil axis, and the correlation coefficients for the 6.72 MeV state are within 25% of the plane wave predictions. A 1.25 MeV gamma transition between the 7.34 and 6.09 MeV states was observed in the coincidence measurements. Branching ratios for the gamma rays associated with the de-excitation of the 7.34 MeV state were determined to be Γ 7.34/ Γ 6.72 ≦ 0.22±0.07 and Γ 1.25/ Γ 6.72 = 0.5±0.2.
