Abstract

Spectroscopic and kinetic evidence is used to classify the proton transfer (PT) processes in the molecular singlet and triplet excited states according to the energy barriers for proton translocation. Emphasis is laid on the group of H-bonded benzoxazoles investigated in the condensed phase and in the isolated molecules, cooled by supersonic free expansion. Genuine examples of thermally activated excited state PT processes are presented. The role of proton tunnelling in the overall reaction mechanism is discussed.
