Abstract

The proton total reaction cross sections of 9Be are presented for eight energies between 16.2 and 28.0 MeV. The results are in good agreement with optical-model predictions from analyses of elastic scattering data. The results are also compared to predictions of the opaque-nucleus model which represents the reaction cross sections of medium and heavy weight nuclei rather well. This simple model correctly predicts the observed energy dependence, but requires a larger radius parameter than is needed for the heavier nuclei.
