Abstract

The proton magnetic resonance line shapes have been observed in solid sym-tetrachloroethane and sym-tetrabromoethane. The second moments of the absorption lines provide unambiguous assignments of the molecular forms. The results confirm the formation by CHBr2CHBr2 of crystals of either trans- or of gauche-molecules, depending upon thermal treatment, with the trans-crystals stabler at low temperatures. Only the gauche-form of solid CHCl2CHCl2 could be prepared.
