Abstract
The decay rate of the proton into two-body channels is calculated in the SU(5) grand unified theory using the hadronic wavefunctions of the bag model. Summing only the two-body modes leads to a lifetime of τ p = 8 × 10 30 yr, for a heavy boson mass of 3.8 × 10 14 GeV.
