Abstract

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a non-infectious inflammatory neutrophilic dermatosis that is commonly associated with autoimmune and neoplastic disorders. Both innate and cell immunity are involved in the pathogenesis of PG, although this is not completely understood. Correct or early PG diagnosis is rarely achieved, which has given rise to the establishment of new diagnostic criteria to replace the traditional practice of diagnosis by exclusion. Another point is that PG treatment is still, to a great extent, empirical; the focus is on the severity and rate of progression of the condition. Systemic corticosteroids, synthetic immunosuppressants and biological agents are the main therapies, although the growth in understanding the disease makes it possible to study new treatment targets. In this protocol, the clinical presentation of PG, associated diseases, diagnostic management and treatment are reviewed.
