Abstract

TypesInfectious pericarditis encompasses three different aetiologies: viral, purulent and tuberculous. DiagnosisDiagnosis of each of these three entities requires specific study which should be protocolised. Viral pericarditis requires integral testing of the pericardial fluid or tissue which includes histological, cytological, immunohistological and molecular study. In the case of purulent pericarditis, diagnosis is based on findings of pericardial fluid of purulent appearance with a predominance of leukocytes and microbiological analysis. Finally, tuberculous pericarditis requires the tubercle bacillus to be demonstrated in the pericardial fluid or tissue. TreatmentTreatment will be specific to the aetiology.
