Abstract

Thyroid storm is a rare and life-threatening disorder appearing within severe thyrotoxicosis with systemic decompensation. Acute events, infection, trauma or surgery are the triggering agents. Clinically, cardiovascular symptoms stand out, especially tachycardia, as well as hyperthermia and central nervous system disorders. Since thyroid hormone levels do not allow to differentiating it from frank hyperthyroidism without complications, diagnosis is based on clinical criteria. Treatment is based on support measures, pharmacological inhibition of the synthesis and release of thyroid hormones (antithyroid, iodinated contrasts or iodine solution, glucocorticoids, cholestyramine), as well as peripheral blockade of the hormone action (beta-adrenergic blockers). Survival depends on early diagnosis (based on diagnostic suspicion) and immediate initiation of specific and support treatment accompanied by the treatment of triggering factor.
