Abstract

Infections may affect the kidneys through different mechanisms. The fundamental origin of lesions is often haemodynamic damage, as occurs in sepsis or diarrhoea caused by an infection. On other occasions the pathogen itself may cause a lesion directly in the renal parenchyma, as happens in some viral infections. Lastly, another common mechanism for involvement consists of an alteration in the immune response caused by an infection. Different forms of glomerulonephritis may be caused in this context. The purpose of this protocol is to specify in greater detail the diagnosis and treatment of the main forms of kidney involvement associated with infections.
